Nottingham named one of 119 global leaders in climate action

Nottingham has been named as one of the 119 cities worldwide that's taking bold leadership on climate action by environmental non-profit organisation, CDP. This is the third year in a row that Nottingham has made it onto the CDP A List, showing just how serious we are about becoming a carbon neutral city by 2028.

The CDP's Cities A List is all about encouraging cities to ramp up their climate action and is based on strong environmental data that cities have shared.

In 2023, over 900 cities across the globe were rated by CDP for their climate action, and only 13% of them got an A. Nottingham is proud to be among the top rankers, along with 26 other local authority areas in the UK, including Belfast, Manchester, and Leeds.

Nottingham getting the 'A List' status from CDP recognises the work we're doing to tackle the climate crisis. We're not just reducing emissions, but we're also making our communities stronger and more resilient to the impacts of climate change.

Cities on the A List are showing the world how it's done. We're taking four times as many steps to adapt to the climate crisis compared to cities not on the A List.

Our goal to make Nottingham carbon neutral by 2028 isn't a solo mission. It's a city-wide effort that includes everyone, and it's led by our very own City Council’s Carbon Neutral Policy Team. They support the council and wider city to tackle the climate crisis across nine key themes: the built environment, transport, energy generation, consumption, waste, water, carbon removal, resilience and adaptation, and nature.

Since we launched the Carbon Neutral Action Plan in June 2020, we've been making some serious progress towards our goals. The latest data shows that we've cut carbon emissions by a whopping 44% since 2005.

We've had some real wins in Nottingham's journey to reduce carbon emissions. Here are a few highlights:

·        We've retrofitted nearly 1,000 homes in Nottingham with energy efficiency measures through the Greener HousiNG initiative.

·        Introduced the Lime e-bike hire scheme, making it easier to get around town without a car.

·        More than 36,500 trees have been planted in the last three years.

·        Helping residents live more sustainable lives with the Green Rewards app.

·        We're encouraging businesses in the city to cut emissions with incentives like the Workplace Travel Grant and UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

As the City Council is only responsible for about 2% of Nottingham’s emissions, we're working with Nottingham’s Green Partnership, which is a group of over 40 businesses and organisations. Since it formed in 1992, Nottingham Green Partnership has united all our efforts to build a greener future for the city.

Nottingham is proud to be leading the way on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which will also make the city an even better place to live. Working towards becoming carbon neutral will mean a better future for the people of the city, where air quality, energy security and health outcomes are all improved as a result.
